AI Express CEO Aloke Singh to head Tata’s low cost carrier business from January 1 – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Aviation veteran and Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh will from January 1, 2023, head the combined mega budget carrier the Tata Group is creating by merging AirAsia India (AAIPL) into AI Express.
AAIPL CEO Sunil Bhaskaran will head a big training academy AI is creating to meet its future manpower requirements. The budget airlines’ merger has to be completed within a year and AAIPL’s name could soon be changed to reflect the coming changes.
Air India CEO-MD Campbell Wilson said in a communication to employees on Thursday: “Following the recent acquisition and subsidiarisation of Air Asia India, and its ongoing integration with Air India Express, it has been decided to consolidate the LCC business under a single CEO. (While merger process is on) a single CEO will provide the clarity and singular accountability necessary to navigate that process. I’m pleased to convey that Aloke Singh, the incumbent CEO of Air India Express, will be the sole CEO of the Air India LCC airlines effective January 1, 2023.”
“On the same date, the current CEO of Air Asia India, Sunil Bhaskaran, will assume leadership of a new initiative that is not just crucial the future of the Air India Group, but vitally important to aviation in India itself: the creation of a training academy to rival the biggest and best anywhere in the world. Over the coming years the ambitious new Air India – and Indian aviation generally – will require thousands of home-grown pilots, engineers, cabin crew, airport managers and other functional specialists. As India’s flagship airline, we have a need and a duty to develop this talent,” Wilson said.
Sunil Bhaskaran also wrote to employees, saying that after “completing over four years in my current role as the MD & CEO of AirAsia India, I am now moving on to another assignment within the group at the end of this month.”
The Tata Group is consolidating its four airlines by merging full service Vistara into AI and the two budget carriers. Eventually it will be one airline, AI, with a budget arm.
