Ahead of Asia Cup, World Cup, BCCI says, “Bumrah in final stages of rehab”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced that India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah is in the final stages of rehab and the medical team will give their decision on his availability post the completion of a few practice games.

This announcement comes as a sigh of relief for the Indian cricket team ahead of two marquee cricket tournaments scheduled for this year: the Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.

Bumrah, 29, who suffered a recurring back injury and has been out of action after T20Is against Australia last year, underwent a surgery in New Zealand in March.

India’s cricket governing body also gave an update for batters Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who have commenced batting in the nets. The two middle order batsmen for India are currently undergoing strength and fitness drills.

“The BCCI Medical Team is satisfied with their progress and will increase their intensity in terms of both skills and strength and conditioning in the coming days,” said BCCI in a release.

Iyer suffered by a bulging disc in his lower back, had to be pulled out mid-way from the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in March in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, KL Rahul sustained an injured right thigh during the Indian Premiere League and underwent a surgery. In its announcement, BCCI came bearing good news for all cricket fans as Rishabh Pant has also made significant progress in the rehabilitation stage following the brutal accident. Pant, 25, has begun practicing in the nets for both batting and keeping, the BCCI said.

Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna is also on the road to recovery as he is back bowling in the nets at the National Cricket Academy with Bumrah, BCCI said.
