AFL great dead in Grand Final tragedy

A football great who played for the Melbourne Demons and Western Bulldogs has died just hours before his teams play in the Grand Final.

Australian football great Greg Parke has died just hours before seeing his teams compete in the 2021 AFL Grand Final.

The former Melbourne Demons and Western Bulldogs player is reported to have died on Saturday morning at the age of 73.

According to Melbourne-based freelance football writer Andrew Gigacz, Parke died after a long illness.

Parke played 189 senior games in the VFL and SANFL, including 119 career appearances for the Demons.

Parke also played 37 games for the Bulldogs and enjoyed brief one-season cameos with Fitzroy and South Australian club Norwood.

He retired in 1977 with a haul of 274 goals.

Social media football stats guru @sirswampthing posted on Twitter Parke is just one of seven players in the history of Australian football to play more than 30 games for both the Demons and Dogs.

Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will enter Optus Stadium to play out the 2021 AFL Grand Final before 7pm (AEST) ahead of the first bounce at 7.15pm.

The official pre-match entertainment begins from 6.15pm.
