A Moment For the Red Carpet Risk Takers at Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival has been underway for well over a week now, and the red carpet has been filled with tons of glitzy gowns and dapper suits. It’s to be expected, given it’s one of the dressiest (and most-watched) events in the world. However, there’s a handful of stars in attendance who have rebuked traditional evening wear and, instead, embraced fashion-forward silhouettes that are more unexpected and totally daring.

Call them Cannes’s best fashion weirdos, and the best dressed. Unsurprisingly, Tilda Swinton leads the pack. Forgoing a ball gown, Swinton served up a different kind of glamour this week in a white, floor-length shirt dress by Alaïa to the premiere of her film R.M.N. Equally refreshing was Kristen Stewart’s Chanel tweed jumpsuit (with no top underneath). It lent a fresh attitude to the ladies-who-lunch suit.

French singer Yseult, meanwhile, attended a screening of There Thousand Years of Longing wearing a surreal white Schiaparelli coat with a built-in cone bra, finished off with a chiseled-ab handbag and gold-toe heels. Isabelle Huppert also continued her winning Balenciaga streak at the screening of Forever Young in a green spandex look, complete with the matching pantaboots and train. Sure, Cannes has also had tons of tulle or sequin dresses, but these stars’ willingness to experiment with and commit to different fashion ideas has given Cannes a wake up call.

Below, more of Cannes’s best fashion risk-takers.
