Kane sets his sights on beating Alan Shearer’s top-flight tally after breaking Jimmy Greaves’ record

Harry Kane fired a chilling warning to his Premier League rivals last night after overtaking legendary Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The Spurs striker was visibly emotional as he addressed supporters after the scoring the winner – his 267th for the club – in a 1-0 win over Manchester City, describing the moment as ‘magical’.

His manager Antonio Conte – who missed the game as he recuperates from an operation to remove his gallbladder in Italy – spoke to Kane on the phone after the game to congratulate his talismanic striker.

But the England striker immediately set his sights on adding to his impressive goal tally as he hunts down Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record of 260.

Kane’s goal against City was his 200th top-flight goal and the England captain said: ‘When I started playing regularly it wasn’t even in my imagination to score 200 Premier League goals and I have a few more years left so hopefully there are more to come.

Kane scored his 267th goal for the club, breaking the record which has stood for over 50 years 

‘We will take it all in and look forward to the next one.’

Tottenham posted a special video message from late Greaves’ son Danny after the game to commemorate the occasion.

‘If anyone was to beat it, he’d be absolutely delighted it was you,’ said Greaves Jr.

And Kane added: ‘He [Jimmy Greaves] is a complete hero, one of the best strikers to play the game so to be in that conversation is special.

‘And to overtake him is a huge moment for me. It’s quite surreal, it’s a magical feeling.

‘I wanted to do it at a special place so it’s amazing for me to do it here in front of these amazing fans. I’ve been here since 11, so there’s been a lot of hard work, sacrifice and dedication.

‘It’s hard to take it all in right now. But when I finish playing I will look back and it is something I will be extremely proud of.

‘It’s been hard not think about it but you have to try and focus on each game – but it was always going to be a magic feeling.

There has been so much talk about it in the last couple of weeks and to do it in such a big game is even more special.

‘It was an overwhelming feeling of adrenaline, I was desperate for us to win so we could have this moment together.’

Spurs coach Cristian Stellini, who stood in for Conte in the dugout, added: ‘We spoke to Antonio, he was really happy. He complimented everyone especially Harry for the record.

‘He has given them a day off tomorrow – they enjoyed that.’
