Few topics are as hotly contested as airport style. For the rich and famous, it’s a veritable art form, with actors boarding flights in full looks and stilettos; for the average traveler, on the other hand, it can be an excuse to simply wear pajamas. Here at Vogue, most of us tread somewhere in the middle, aiming for looks that are comfy, casual, and cozy—but still presentable! That’s easier said than done, though, which is why we still find ourselves digging through our closets at 4:00 a.m. in search of pieces we won’t regret wearing on a cramped, stuffy plane (or train, bus, or car).
Everyone has their own idea of the “perfect” travel uniform, so we asked 11 editors to share theirs. For some of us, it’s luxe sweats and athleisure all the way, while others are staunchly anti-leggings. Some swear by cushy sneakers, while others prefer a more refined loafer—and a few editors even have on-flight skincare strategies, usually in the form of a hydrating cream or mask to combat the frigid cabin air. My flight uniform is only deviated from in the case of long hauls. This Thanksgiving, it’s a domestic flight, so it’s the classic: Slvrlake jeans (I wear these all the time, they’re not too rigid but also won’t bag out if sat in, so no brainer to wear on the flight), a long-sleeve striped tee from Kule (I’ll switch out the sweater or cardigan depending on the forecast), and a “throw it all in” tote bag. To be completely honest, the tote is in addition to my inevitable backpack full of snacks, activities, and necessities for my kids; it gives me room for my things and works as an overflow bag for them (and catcher for things they drop mid-flight). Finish it off with sneakers (Vans or Nikes) and (again, full transparency) a baby carrier for the full wardrobe.

I cover travel for Vogue and Vogue.com, which means if I’m not on a flight, I’m booking one. Here’s my cold-weather travel uniform: On top, I wear a cozy Jenni Kayne sweater that doubles as a wardrobe staple for the trip. Then, Ciao Lucia pants, which are flattering, yet, with their elastic waist and drawstring, are comfortable to wear on even a transatlantic flight. My outfit MVP is easy-to-slip on sneakers—I always need something I can sprint through an airport in. Seven minutes to get to my connection at the opposite end of O’Hare? Challenge accepted.
