11 Vogue Editors Share Their Ideal Holiday Travel Outfits

Few topics are as hotly contested as airport style. For the rich and famous, it’s a veritable art form, with actors boarding flights in full looks and stilettos; for the average traveler, on the other hand, it can be an excuse to simply wear pajamas. Here at Vogue, most of us tread somewhere in the middle, aiming for looks that are comfy, casual, and cozy—but still presentable! That’s easier said than done, though, which is why we still find ourselves digging through our closets at 4:00 a.m. in search of pieces we won’t regret wearing on a cramped, stuffy plane (or train, bus, or car).

Everyone has their own idea of the “perfect” travel uniform, so we asked 11 editors to share theirs. For some of us, it’s luxe sweats and athleisure all the way, while others are staunchly anti-leggings. Some swear by cushy sneakers, while others prefer a more refined loafer—and a few editors even have on-flight skincare strategies, usually in the form of a hydrating cream or mask to combat the frigid cabin air. Ahead of Thanksgiving, read (and shop) all of their tips below.

My flight uniform is only deviated from in the case of long hauls. This Thanksgiving, it’s a domestic flight, so it’s the classic: Slvrlake jeans (I wear these all the time, they’re not too rigid but also won’t bag out if sat in, so no brainer to wear on the flight), a long-sleeve striped tee from Kule (I’ll switch out the sweater or cardigan depending on the forecast), and a “throw it all in” tote bag. To be completely honest, the tote is in addition to my inevitable backpack full of snacks, activities, and necessities for my kids; it gives me room for my things and works as an overflow bag for them (and catcher for things they drop mid-flight). Finish it off with sneakers (Vans or Nikes) and (again, full transparency) a baby carrier for the full wardrobe.

I cover travel for Vogue and Vogue.com, which means if I’m not on a flight, I’m booking one. Here’s my cold-weather travel uniform: On top, I wear a cozy Jenni Kayne sweater that doubles as a wardrobe staple for the trip. Then, Ciao Lucia pants, which are flattering, yet, with their elastic waist and drawstring, are comfortable to wear on even a transatlantic flight. My outfit MVP is easy-to-slip on sneakers—I always need something I can sprint through an airport in. Seven minutes to get to my connection at the opposite end of O’Hare? Challenge accepted.

Thankfully, no dreaded airport lines are in sight for this year’s Thanksgiving travels. However, a quick hour and a half drive down to the Jersey Shore still calls for cozy fall fits. Everlane’s half-zip sweater paired with my new Pedro García boots perfectly deliver comfort without compromising style.

I love keeping my airport travel style understated and comfortable, but still chic. I love these slit pants from Mango; they have all the comfort of a legging, but the sophistication of a trouser. I usually style this with my comfiest sweater, like my Vogue Collection crewneck, or a cozy pullover from Vince.

Comfort and versatility are key for my travel uniform, whether on planes, trains, or automobiles! I like to be prepared for whatever lies ahead. I start with a relaxed fit pant, like these straight-leg sweats by Alo Yoga, which I like to pair with a comfortable boot. Then, I’ll style this with an everyday tank top and cozy sweater that I can easily layer depending on the temperature.

On my last couple flights, I’ve taken a cashmere poncho with me and it’s been an absolute game-changer. It’s the chicest way to beat the plane’s air conditioning and creates a cocoon-like state of comfort, which is key when traveling because, let’s face it, traveling is an all-around awful experience.  Plus, it packs wonderfully in my carry-on, which is a beautiful bag by Métier.

I have two-holiday travel essentials, this La Ligne striped quarter-zip and a pair of Beyond Yoga’s flared pants. During one of the most stressful times of year, I try to keep my outfits simple and versatile. I know the sweater will come in handy for making last-minute grocery runs look chic, and having an extra pair of workout pants on hand is always a good idea.

I will be traveling from New York to Boston this Thanksgiving. By late November, both cities are absolutely freezing. A warm coat is essential for the journey. I love this Gorski option. The fox lining offers the perfect, comforting embrace.

Fortunately, my travel home for the holidays is just a 3-hour drive (tops!) from the city. Since it’s in upstate New York, I always pack my warm essentials first to prep for the frigid temps and cozy nights in. Think insulating leggings, puffer coats, and blanket scarves.

My journey home is just a quick 1.5-hour train ride (plus a 45-minute drive), but being comfy and cozy is always top of mind. I’ve been on the hunt for matching, basic sets, and this oversized sweatshirt and pair of sweatpants from H&M definitely piqued my interest; they’re soft and lightweight, plus I can mismatch them with my other pieces of loungewear.

Fortunately, my family is local, and all I have to do is hop on a train for Thanksgiving. As such, I’ll be sticking to my elevated travel uniform for this time of year. It always consists of sleek black essentials—a thick scarf, boxy sweater, flared pants, and mid-heel leather boots—paired with a long, vivid coat and tinted sunglasses for pops of color. It strikes the right balance between chic, cozy, and formal enough to head straight into a family gathering.
