z-morh: Gardakri to drive through the escape tunnel of Z-Morh project – Times of India
SONMARG: Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari will be the first person to ride through the escape tunnel of Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning. The tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity between Gangangir and Sonmarg, the stretch which gets closed for traffic for almost six months during winters.
According to the NHIDCL, which is implementing the project, travelling to Sonmarg during next winter may also be easier for commuters as they will complete the “escape tunnel”, which can be opened to traffic for certain period.
Executive director of NHIDCL, G S Kambo said this will be for the first time when traffic can be allowed to Sonmarg during the winters. He said once the entire 6.5 km bidirectional twin tunnel gets ready next year, it will help develop Sonmarg as a winter tourism hub like that of Gulmarg.
Kambo said the Z-Morh tunnel project, which resumed in 2018 after a long break after the IL&FS went bust, has been progressing well. Now they are confident of completing the Rs 2,200 crore project by June 2022 instead of 2023.
On Tuesday, Gadkari will also review the progress of Zojila tunnel project, which will become the Asia’s longest.
