YouTube allows fans and creators to gift paid channel subscriptions – Times of India

YouTube has started rolling out a feature that allows users — both fans and creators to gift paid channel subscriptions to each other. According to a report by Engadget, multiple influential streamers have tweeted about the announcement made by the Google-owned video streaming platform. This feature can turn out to be a new monetisation tool for the creators and many of them were excited about this new feature from YouTube. Several content streamers believe that the gifting subscription tool can be an easy way to generate revenue as well as help them to build their community.
What is the new gifting subscriptions feature?
The gifting subscriptions feature isn’t something new as this tool has already been made famous by YouTube Gaming’s primary competitor — Twitch. YouTube has been holding back this much-anticipated feature for some time now and has finally released the tool for some selected regions. Initially, YouTube tested the gifting subscription feature for its users in Japan earlier in 2022. The feature is still in its beta phase and will now be available to all users of YouTube Gaming in the US and the UK.
How much do YouTube Gaming subscriptions cost?
Presently, fans can access user badges, emotes and other exclusive content by their favourite creators by paying $4.99 (roughly around Rs 385). To compete with Twitch, YouTube Gaming has also released multiple other features like Live Redirects that allow streamers to redirect fans to other streams or premieres.
Why streamers may choose YouTube Gaming over Twitch?
In recent years, multiple high-profile streamers have rejected Twitch to join YouTube Gaming. However, Twitch has continued to be the biggest US-based platform for live streaming. Last month, there were reports about Twitch partners getting a smaller cut of revenue from subscriptions under a new monetisation model introduced by the Amazon-owned platform. The reports suggested that the revenue for Twitch partners will reduce to 50 per cent from the previous 70 per cent.
On the contrary, YouTube Gaming charges only 30 per cent of a streamer’s revenue from channel subscriptions. However, this could change if popular Twitch creators join the Google-owned streaming service and the YouTube Gaming gets a bigger audience. Recently, Google updated its policy for personal loan apps in India. Check out the new Play Store rules here.
