Houston Astros outfielder and designated hitter Yordan Alvarez left Friday night’s game against the Atlant Braves early and was taken to the hospital in a scary situation. Alvarez reportedly felt ill on the field.
According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, Alvarez “experienced shortness of breath.”
Alvarez’s vitals were reportedly normal, and he’s being checked out at the ER.
The 25-year-old slugger has continuously been a powerhouse for Houston over the past few years, and his sudden illness is certainly concerning.

Alvarez has had a great season so far. He’s hit .295/.400/.612 for an OPS of 1.012. He began his MLB career in 2019 with Houston and immediately had a breakout. In his first season, he hit .313/.412/.655 for an OPS of 1.067.
He’s by far the best hitter in Houston. Prior to his exit on Friday night in two at-bats, he was a non-factor with two strikeouts. Luckily, he took the necessary actions of putting his health first. In full health, he’s a hitter to be feared.
He also gives the Astros lineup a lot of potential. Despite making it to the World Series last season and having a 100 percent chance of making it to the playoffs this season (according to FanGraphs), the lineup is average overall.
Among all MLB teams, the Astros have the 13th-best batting average (.246) and ninth-best on-base percentage (.320). They do, however, have a good amount of power in the lineup. They have the fifth-best slugging percentage (.428) and OPS (.747). Alvarez is a major contributor to that.
Hopefully, Alvarez will return to full health quickly and safely.
