The New York Yankees have been busy at the MLB trade deadline, and that trend continued with a trade with the Oakland Athletics.
Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting that the Yankees have traded for right-handed starting pitcher Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino. In return for the two Oakland arms, the Yankees are trading back a handful of pitchers of their own.
The A’s will receive pitchers Ken Waldichuk, J.P. Sears, and Luis Medina. Second baseman Cooper Bowman will also be heading to Oakland as part of the trade.
At 29 years old, Montas will be under team control until after the 2023 season. He has a 4-9 record as a starter this season in 19 starts with a 3.19 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.
Trivino is 1-6 with 10 saves on the season and a 6.47 ERA. According to Passan, he’ll be arbitration-eligible next season and will be a free agent in 2025.
While this is certainly an all-in move for the Yankees, currently the top team in the American League, boasting a 69-34 record, the trade does come with a cost.
Waldichuk, in particular, will be tough to see walk out the door. He’s a 24-year-old left-hander who MLB.com ranked as the fifth-best prospect in New York’s farm system. He was 6-3 in 17 starts this season in the minors, boasting a 2.71 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 76 and one-third innings.
