Xiaomi: World peace and not ‘sponsors’ of war: Xiaomi’s reply to Ukraine’s accusations – Times of India

Ukraine‘s National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) recently accused Xiaomi and the company’s executives, including company founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun, an “international sponsor of war” saying that “Xiaomi Corporation is sponsoring the military aggression of a terrorist state.” The Chinese tech brand slammed the allegation and said that it “strongly against the accusation from the NACP.”
What Ukraine’s NACP accused Xiaomi of
The NACP said that it included Xiaomi in the list of international war sponsors because the company continued its work in the Russian Federation after the full-scale invasion.
“The reason for inclusion in the list … was that the company not only continued its work in the Russian Federation after the full-scale invasion [of Ukraine], but is still the leader in smartphone sales in the terrorist state,” the agency said in the statement.
“Xiaomi Corp is sponsoring the military aggression of a terrorist state and must bear both the reputational and legal consequences of its actions,” it added.
While profiling the company, the agency said that Xiaomi did not announce its withdrawal from Russia, but since the spring of 2022, it has not carried out marketing activities in Russia.
“However, as of today, Xiaomi is actively resuming recruitment for its Russian offices and announced the official start of sales of flagship smartphones in Russia, which indicates the company’s intentions to restore a full-fledged presence in Russia,” it said.
The company is the leader in smartphone sales in Russia, and in July 2022, Xiaomi and its sub-brand Poco together held 42% of the Russian smartphone market, ranking first in terms of sales.
The agency also said that while “the Russians bombed peaceful Ukrainian cities, Xiaomi managed to increase deliveries to the Russian Federation by 39% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the previous one.”
“Yes, Xiaomi Corporation is sponsoring the military aggression of a terrorist state and must bear both the reputational and legal consequences of its actions,” it said, adding that the agency has already included 21 companies in the list of international sponsors of the war.
