World Refrigeration Day: 26 June, this year’s theme on sustainable cooling solutions

World Refrigeration Day (WRD) is celebrated each year on 26 June, the birthday of refrigeration pioneer Lord Kelvin.

This year’s theme is “Next Generation Cooling”  with events all over the world focusing on the need for innovative and sustainable cooling solutions capable of achieving global energy efficiency and net zero goals.

The WRD was established by the World Refrigeration Day Secretariat in Derbyshire, England, in 2019, to honour the people and technologies responsible for creating and maintaining the world we live in and raising awareness and understanding of the significant role that the refrigeration technology play in modern life.

This year’s WRD aims to raise awareness of how the modern cooling industry is adapting and evolving to meet the challenges and opportunities of increasing demand for low carbon cooling and heating solutions in warming climates.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), air conditioning is responsible for almost 20% of the total electricity used in buildings globally and demand is predicted to keep rising steeply during the next three decades.

As the world is warming and driving demand for cooling technologies, at the same time there is also a need to reduce energy consumption.

Refrigeration technolog plays a vital role in several industries including healthcare, food chain, buildings, data centres and transport.

“As an industry, we need to recruit, train and retain people equipped with the knowledge and skills that a modern, forward-thinking industry requires,” industry veteran and WRD founder Stephen Gill said in an announcement.

“This year’s campaign is an opportunity to showcase what we are doing now to ensure we have the diverse and highly skilled workforce that our sector needs for the future,” added Gill.

“[It] tells the story of how our well-being depends upon sustainable cooling (and heating) and how cooling technology choices and an evolving industry can safeguard the well-being of future generations,” said WRD.

Over 800 physical events took place in 153 countries in WRD’s inaugural 2019 campaign.
