Women tie rakhis to Army jawans in Kargil

A team of twenty, including women bikers from various parts of the country, collected rakhis from various cities in the country and went to Kargil to tie rakhi to the Indian soldiers on Raksha bandhan on Sunday, in a bid to celebrate the occasion.

The five bikers were part of the core team led by Rohit Acharekar that started from Mumbai on August 8 to celebrate the day in Kargil. The team also included Ankita Thakur, Amit Ranat and Kushi Ranat who joined from various cities.

“We started from Mumbai and stopped in several cities like Ahmedabad, Baroda and Palampur to collect rakhis for the Indian soldiers. We reached Kargil on Saturday and celebrated the occasion at Kargil War Memorial,” Rohit Acharekar, whose organization managed the journey from Mumbai to Kargil, said.

The core team of bikers were supported by a support team of 14 others and led by Acharekar. “The whole journey was fantastic with the whole team of bikers travelling through so many big and small cities. The fascinating journey took us to Kargil and we were happy that we tied rakhi in the hands of our soldiers guarding the border. We had to take permission from the army as this is an unusual time of pandemic and we were travelling to Kargil,” Rohit said.

The team reached Kargil a day ahead on Saturday and maintaining Indian customs celebrated the raksha bandhan ceremony with the soldiers early in the morning.

The team of bikers also joined from different cities of India, including Kolkata, Maharashtra and Delhi. The whole team enjoyed a journey together from August 8 to 22. “People were happy to contribute rakhis for the soldiers and the excitement was overwhelming. We collected the rakhis from Ahmedabad and other cities wherever we stopped,” Rohit, who is at Srinagar at the moment with his whole team, told ET.
