Matt Doherty could rejoin Wolves on a free transfer as the club look to make their first summer signing.

The Republic of Ireland international is available for nothing after his short-term deal with Atletico Madrid expired at the end of last season.

And with Wolves operating within strict limits in the transfer market, bringing in a proven Premier League player for nothing represents good business.

Doherty left Molineux for Tottenham for £15million three years ago but never established himself in north London and was allowed to depart for Spain last January.

The 31-year-old is represented by Jorge Mendes’ powerful Gestifute agency, who have strong relations with Wolves.

Wolves have already sold captain Ruben Neves to Saudi club Al-Hilal for £47m as well as defender Nathan Collins to Brentford for £23m.

They rejected a bid of about £30m for centre-back Max Kilman from Napoli, who are now thought to have turned their sights to Japan defender Ko Itakura, who plays for Borussia Monchengladbach and is available for less than half of Wolves’ £35m asking price for Kilman.

Boss Julen Lopetegui values Kilman highly and the 26-year-old was not pushing to leave Wolves. Kilman could now sign an improved contract which would take him closer to the club’s top earners.

The former futsal player was signed for only £40,000 from non-league Maidenhead United but is now a linchpin of the Wolves team.

With Wolves’ valuation now known, it remains to be seen whether Premier League clubs make a move before his new contract is agreed.

Wolves have also been offered the chance to sign Arthur Melo, who had an injury-hit loan at Liverpool last season, from Juventus, but have yet to show serious interest in the Brazilian.
