Wolves are close to agreement on a loan with obligation worth up to £40million for Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

The Molineux club had faced competition from Leeds United, Arsenal and Everton for the Brazilian after initiating talks at the end of last month.

Further positive negotiations this week have swung the deal their way and with verbal agreement now in place, the 23-year old is expected to be the first signing of Julen Lopetegui’s era as manager.

Cunha has eight caps for Brazil but has only made one league appearance for Atletico this season.

Wolves have also been talking to Atletico about a deal for centre back Felipe and have asked Manchester United about a loan deal for Aaron Wan Bissaka but face competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Cunha signed for Atletico in August 2021 but is expected to leave after just 15 months with the LaLiga giants as he’s struggled to cement a place in Dieogo Simeone’s team.

During his time at the club, Cunha has scored seven goals in 54 appearances, though several of his minutes have been substitute appearances.

Cunha is eager to get more minutes under his belt and believes a loan deal with Wolves could afford him that opportunity.

Wolves will be back in action later today when they face Gillingham in the last-16 of the Carabao Cup at the Molineux Stadium.

Wolves will also get back underway in the Premier League on Boxing Day when they play against Everton at Goodison Park.
