When Kali Uchis was in the studio putting the finishing touches to her new single, “No Hay Ley,” the visual world she wanted to construct around it came to her almost as an epiphany. “This song made me think of fashion,” Uchis says of the track, which pairs a tale of love conquering all—the chorus, sung in Spanish, roughly translates to “there are no laws to love”—with a rattling, hip-shaking Latin house beat inspired by Uchis’s youth in the clubs of Colombia. “The song feels very nostalgic, very early 2000s vibe, so I wanted something kind of like that—and I wanted to bring in people from the fashion world, too.”
So that she did. Enlisting the help of Torso Solutions, the maverick creative duo whose work you might remember most recently from their showstopping collaborations with Casey Cadwallader at Mugler, Uchis began constructing her very own high fashion fantasy set—where else?—in the streets of Paris. “Sometimes when you try to do something too Y2K, it can feel a little bit too cliche or too dated, so I was into keeping it more modern and making a video that was all about motion,” says Uchis. (Indeed, across the video, you’ll see her leaping in and out of limousines, free running down the city’s narrow alleyways, and throwing shapes in the elevators of the Centre Pompidou.) “I wanted to do something I hadn’t really done before,” Uchis says of the video’s frenetic energy.
