Wisconsin star guard Johnny Davis injured on flagrant foul vs. Nebraska
No. 10 Wisconsin not only suffered a stunning home loss to unranked Nebraska on Sunday, but they also lost their best player, and a National Player of the Year candidate to injury as well.
Early in the second half, moments after recording a ferocious block on defense, Badgers guard Johnny Davis went in for a contested layup attempt on the other end, but was whacked by Trey McGowens. Davis fell hard to the floor and went to the locker room and McGowens was assessed a flagrant two foul, resulting in an automatic ejection.
Davis didn’t return to the game and the Cornhuskers upset the hosts 74-73 for just their 10th win of the season.
“I’m optimistic that he’s going to be fine,” Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard said, per the Associated Press and ESPN. “The officials knew my thoughts, and knew them actually before it happened on some other things that I saw. I’ll leave it at that and I’ll watch the replay and I’ll make the necessary phone calls.”
Davis, a sophomore, is third in the Big Ten in points per game (20.3) and fifth in rebounds per game (8.3)
With the loss, the Badgers also missed a chance to clinch the conference title outright and fall to 24-6.
