Wipro asks freshers who opted for lower packages to clear test or face termination, union alleges

Wipro has asked employees who had opted for a lower package of 3.5 lakhs per annum from 6.5 lakhs per annum to clear a fresh programme–Project Readiness Program– or face separation, according to a Pune-based IT union.

“Project Readiness Program (PRP) is a program offered by Talent Transformation to all campus and off-campus hires referred as NGA’s (Next Gen Associates). The broad objective of PRP is to equip NGA with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to start working on customer projects,” according to the mail sent to freshers.

The candidates will be tasked to undergo the PRP assessment test as a part of the training which will have negative marking of 0.25 per question. “Failure to secure ≥60% post final supplementary attempt will lead to separation action with immediate effect through HR,” the document said.

ET has seen a copy of the communication sent to the freshers. Mails sent to Wipro did not elicit a response till the time of publishing.

Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) “strongly” condemned the actions of Wipro, a prominent IT services company, towards its fresher employees. Freshers who had opted for a lower package will have to go through Project Readiness Program again.

After the 4-8 weeks training, Wipro also mentioned that if the employees do not clear subsequent tests with an overall score of at least 60%, they will be terminated immediately.

“Wipro’s actions towards its fresher employees are unethical, unfair and unjust. The company’s misleading communication and sudden changes in policy have put the future of these employees at risk,” Harpreet Saluja, president of NITES said in a statement.In February, Wipro reached out to candidates to whom it had earlier rolled out an offer of Rs 6.5 lakh per annum (LPA) through their ‘Velocity’ training programme, and asked them if an offer of Rs 3.5 lakh in annual compensation would be acceptable to them, instead.

These candidates were reportedly waiting to be onboarded. In January, the Bengaluru-based company had terminated over 450 trainees after they failed repeatedly in the company’s internal tests.
