Chicago catcher Willson Contreras has Cubs fans worried again after his social media bios on Twitter and Instagram were scrubbed of team references.
Willson Contreras is still under contract with the Cubs for 2022 but the fact that he could hit free agency in 2023 is worrying fans.
Things weren’t helped when he revealed he hasn’t had extension talks with the team.
So fans on Twitter could be forgiven for freaking out a bit when someone noticed Contreras Twitter and Instagram profiles no longer include any mention of the Cubs.
Willson Contreras’ social media is a big red flag to Cubs fans
There are two good reasons not to jump to conclusions about this one.
First, it may be a holdover from the lockout, when many players scrubbed their MLB bios.
Second, Contreras has had his social media activity misunderstood before.
In 2020, Contreras caused a stir when he changed his Twitter profile picture from him wearing a Cubs jersey to an All-Star jersey.
“A lot of people thought I was getting traded…It didn’t mean anything,” Contreras said, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. “I was just playing around with social media.”
So yes, Contreras could be sending a message to the Cubs about getting that extension done. Or he might have made the change before and he hasn’t updated it since the lockout ended. Or maybe he just enjoys toying with fans on social media.
Whatever happens with Contreras, the news isn’t likely to break or be decided based on his social media bio.
Willson debuted with the Cubs in 2016, earning All-Star status in 2018 and 2019. By the time he comes up for free agency he’ll be approaching 31 years old. Chicago has to make a decision on whether he’s part of their long-term plans.
