Will Virat Kohli touch Don Bradman’s record in WTC Final 2023?
Virat Kohli has put behind the questions, criticisms and discussions surrounding his recent century drought and has now shifted the focus back to breaking records. As the highly-anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia approaches, Kohli has several milestones within his reach, including those held by legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid.
Having ended his international century drought in 2022 during the Asia Cup tournament, Kohli went on to score centuries in both ODIs and Tests. Now, as India prepares for their one-off WTC final against Australia at The Oval on June 7, Kohli aims to add more feathers to his illustrious cap.
One of the significant records in Kohli’s sights is the career century tally in Test cricket. If he manages to score a century at The Oval, it will mark his 29th in the format, putting him on par with the legendary Don Bradman. However, Kohli would still remain one century shy of Australia’s Steve Smith, who currently holds the top spot among active cricketers with 30 Test centuries. England’s Joe Root is closely following with 29 centuries.
Furthermore, Kohli has a chance to surpass Rahul Dravid’s record against Australia. Kohli has an impressive record against the Aussies, having scored 1,979 runs in 24 matches at an average of 48.26. By amassing 188 more runs, he could surpass Dravid’s record of 2,166 runs against Australia and establish himself as the third-highest Indian run-scorer against the team, trailing only Tendulkar (3,630) and VVS Laxman (2,434).
Additionally, Kohli has the opportunity to surpass Virender Sehwag’s career Test record of 8,586 runs. With 8,416 runs in 108 matches, Kohli needs just 170 runs to achieve this milestone. If he accomplishes this feat, the 33-year-old will become the fifth-highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket, joining the ranks of Tendulkar, Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar and Laxman.
As Kohli gears up for the crucial WTC final, all eyes will be on him as he strives to etch his name further into the annals of cricket history by surpassing these remarkable records.
