The stars were out in California on Saturday afternoon to watch Los Angeles FC beat Philadelphia on penalties for its first ever victory in the MLS Cup final.

Held at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, LAFC’s part-owner Will Ferrell was in the stands to support his team in their first ever MLS Cup.

And he had some celerity friends in attendance, with the star names being Justin and Hailey Bieber.

Magic Johnson, the famous LA Lakers guard, was also in attendance and hoping to watch an extra chapter of LA’s sporting history written. Johnson is part-owner of LAFC alongside Ferrell and was humbled by his team’s win.

Taking to Twitter amid the celebrations, Johnson wrote: ‘I want to share with the world Cookie and I are champions again!! Wowwww, what a game! I’m so proud of our players, MVP John McCarthy, Head Coach Steve Cherundolo and his entire staff, my business partners and fellow owners, and the entire organization.

He continued: ‘A special thank you to the best fans in all of Major League Soccer!! We couldn’t have done it without our incredible fan base!’

Ferrell, meanwhile, was seen drinking beer out of the trophy in the celebrations on the pitch.

Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney was there – but he’s a Philadelphia fan.

‘It’s an incredible day, a beautiful day – and a perfect day to bring home the cup,’ he  told FOX Soccer before the game began.

‘One of the foundations of our experience with Wrexham have been the storytelling of sport and you see a million stories that are happening here.’

But the main story of the day was the game itself and LA took the lead in the first half with a goal from Kellyn Acorst in the 28th minute.

In the second, there was reason for McElhenney to cheer as Philadelphia equalized.

It was Daniel Gazdag with the goal in the 59th minute, capitalizing on an ambitious shot from range that fell to his feet from Jose Martinez.

The game turned back in LA’s favor in the 83rd minute – Jesus Murillo scored a header from a corner – but the lead lasted barely two minutes when Jack Elliott scored a powerful header.

As the game hit extra time, the real drama began. LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau broke his leg fouling Cory Burke and was sent off for his troubles.

Soon after, Elliott put Philadelphia into the lead with the defender scoring his second goal of the game.

But by then, Gareth Bale was on the pitch and he wasn’t letting the game pass without an intervention. He headed LAFC level in the 129th minute to take the game to penalties and from there, LA won 3-0.
