Covid-19 cases in Scotland appear to be on a downward trend as the latest figures show that the country recorded less than 2,000 new infections overnight. 

Following the relaxation of restrictions in August, Covid-19 cases across the country surged which sawa peaks of more than 6,000 cases per day. 

At the time, Scotland had some of the highest numbers of coronavirus cases in Europe and several hotspots. When cases are particularly high per 100,000, the area is referred to as a Covid hotspot. 

As of October 4, no areas of Scotland are in top 20 areas in Europe with the highest Covid rates per 100,000. However, there are some neighbourhoods which have a particularly high number of cases per 100,000 in comparison with the rest of the country.

According to data available from the World Health Organisation, the council areas in Scotland which have the highest level of Covid-19 from the past seven days are:

  • Kilmarnock South Central and Caprington (East Ayrshire) with 1,535 cases per 100,000
  • Inverkeithing East (Fife) with 1,232 cases per 100,000
  • Howden (West Lothian) with 1,189 cases per 100,000
  • Carluke South (South Lanarkshire) with 1,150 cases per 100,000
  • Plean and Rural SE (Stirling) with 1,124 cases per 100,000
  • Bridge of Weir (Renfrewshire) with 1,055 cases per 100,000
  • Barra and South Uist (Eilean Siar) with 1,054 cases per 100,000
  • Balmalloch (North Lanarkshire) with 1,043 cases per 100,000
  • Blackburn with (Aberdeenshire) 989 cases per 100,000
  • Auchinleck (East Ayrshire) with 962 cases per 100,000
