Every now and then, Northwestern will beat the Michigan football team on a fall Saturday.
Though they are not annual rivals, the Northwestern Wildcats have faced the Michigan football team 75 times to date entering Saturday’s matchup.
While the Wolverines hold a massive 58-15-2 all-time series lead over Northwestern, the Wildcats have shown historically they are more than capable of knocking off one of the preeminent programs in the Big Ten Conference. Though Michigan has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Wildcats, it was not all that long ago Northwestern beat the Wolverines.
The last time it happened, the Wildcats were venturing into uncharted waters historically as a program, while Michigan was scraping along at rock bottom.
Michigan football hasn’t lost to Northwestern since 2008
Though Michigan has won the last six meetings over the Wildcats, Pat Fitzgerald’s team handed Rich Rodriguez’s team a 21-14 loss in the Big House. Northwestern improved to 8-3 on the season, while Michigan cratered to 3-8 under Rich Rodriguez.
The last time the Wildcats beat the Wolverines head-to-head was on Nov. 15, 2008. Barack Obama had just been elected President.
The winner of this conference game going forward will be awarded the George Jewett Trophy.
