When is the 2023 PGA Championship? Location, dates, field and more for next golf major after The Masters
The 2023 PGA Championship is the next golf major after The Masters. We look at the tournament’s dates, location, field, and more.
Jon Rahm is the first major champion of the 2023 golf calendar as the Spanish stalwart won his first Green Jacket at The Masters this past week. It was only a matter of time before he did, but now he’s looking to add to his major total. His next chance will be the 2023 PGA Championship.
We’ve seen some great moments in recent years at the PGA Championship, whether it was Phil Mickelson winning at Kiawah, Brooks Koepka dominating, or even non-wins like Jordan Spieth’s search for the career grand slam. It’s an underrated major that shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle, especially after a dramatic playoff finish in 2022.
So when is the 2023 PGA Championship? Where will it be played? Let’s take a look at what you need to know for this year’s second major championship.
When is the 2023 PGA Championship? Dates and schedule
A little more than one month after the conclusion of The Masters, the 2023 PGA Championship will be played May 18-21 this year. The tournament used to be played in August of the year on the major championship calendar, but the switch was made to make it the second major of the golf season in 2019 when it then moved to May.
Where is the 2023 PGA Championship? Course info, major championship history
The 2023 PGA Championship will be playing at the Oak Hill Country Club – East Course in Rochester, NY. This site has been the host of this tournament on three separate occasions, most recently in 2013, an event won by Jason Dufner. The tournament was also previously played in 2003 and 1980 at this venue. Meanwhile, Oak Hill has also hosted the U.S. Open three times (1956, 1968, 1989), the 1995 Ryder Cup, the U.S. Amateur twice (1949, 1998), and the Senior PGA Championship twice (2008, 2019).
The East Course at Oak Hill is a Par 70 that measures 7,360 yards for the championship tees. It has a slope rating of 151.
Can LIV Golf players play the 2023 PGA Championship?
After seeing LIV Golf players not only play in The Masters but with some of them near the top of the leaderboard like Brooks Koepka, shockingly Phil Mickelson, and Patrick Reed, some fans may be asking about their status for the 2023 PGA Championship and if LIV players are eligible to compete.
The PGA of America announced earlier this year that all members of LIV Golf who qualify for the tournament will be allowed to play with no exceptions. A brief, incomplete list of players that includes are Koepka, Mickelson, Mito Pereira, Abraham Ancer, Dustin Johnson and several others. This is all to say, LIV should be solidly represented at Oak Hill.
Who won the 2022 PGA Championship?
Last year, the second major of the year was contested at Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK. Mito Pereira held the 54-hole lead but an ill-advised drive down the stretch pushed him out of the lead, forcing a playoff between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris. The former prevailed, giving Thomas his second major championship win and his second Wanamaker Trophy.
