Wheat exports likely to cross 100L tonnes this fiscal, says Goyal – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India’s wheat exports soared nearly three-and-a-half times to cross the 70-lakh tonne mark during 2021-22, with the government expecting to go past 100 lakh tonnes level by the end of the current financial year.
The recent war in Ukraine has boosted the demand for Indian wheat as several countries scramble to source the grain, with the initial gains visible towards the end of the last fiscal year.
Wheat exports have, however, picked up over the last two years rising from around two lakh tonnes in 2019-20 to 21.5 lakh tonne in 2020-21 with the value rising eight fold — from Rs 500 crore to around Rs 4,000 crore.
“We will continue to export wheat in a big way and will cross 100 lakh tonnes comfortably (this year),” commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said at a press conference on Sunday.
The government is working hard to make best use of the opportunity due to disruption in supplies from Russia and Ukraine, among the largest producers of wheat, and has identified new as well existing markets where more exports can take place.
Almost half the exports during the last financial year were to Bangladesh, commerce secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said. These consignments are going through the land route.
Goyal said he has held extensive consultations with stakeholders and several states, such as MP, have also come forward to aid export of wheat. MP CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan has decided to reimburse mandi tax for export consignments with the Centre also holding talks with railways and other agencies to boost shipments.
