What Happens to Prince William and Kate Middleton Now?
On September 9, King Charles III made an announcement concerning his eldest son, Prince William: he would now be known as the Prince of Wales. “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given,” he said in a speech broadcast to the British nation.
It was a bestowment most saw coming: On the day of Queen Elizabeth’s passing, Prince William and Kate Middleton quietly changed their Twitter banner to a portrait of the monarch and their social media bios from “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge” to “The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge,” inferring that transfer of titles from Charles to William had already begun. (Others, too, are affected by this succession change: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children, now sixth and seventh in line for the throne, are eligible for “Prince” and “Princess” titles.)
Yet, these name changes represent broader shifts in the royal hierarchy, too. As of 2016, the Queen represented more than 600 organizations. Throughout the last five years, she’s handed off a significant amount to other remembers of her family. However—especially with the departure of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the removal of Prince Andrew from royal duties—countless numbers of appointments will now go to Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate. One can expect many more public appearances, speeches, and overseas tours from these four members of the royal family.
Prince Charles also confirmed that his son “will undertake the responsibilities of the Duchy of Cornwall.” The Duchy of Cornwall is a working 150,000-acre estate in England complete with its own organic food company—and a multi-million dollar income. The revenue from the Duchy pays for much of the private expenses of the royal family, including wardrobes.
With no formal responsibilities given to them by Parliament, the Prince and Princess of Wales will play a hand in crafting their own public identities. However, one thing is certain: their role on the world stage has just grown larger.
