The hockey world is expecting the team that selects first in the NHL Draft this summer to take consensus top prospect Connor Bedard with its pick. And which team gets that pick will be decided Monday night in the Draft Lottery.
The event, which will be held at the NHL Network Studios in Secaucus, N.J., will be broadcast on Sportsnet and SN NOW at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
Because teams can only move up 10 spots, the term “winning” the lottery is a bit misleading. As Ryan Dixon explains in his story on which team deserves Bedard the most, “should one of the teams ranked 12 to 16 have its sequence of numbers pulled, it would move up 10 slots while still not knocking Anaheim out of the top spot. So, only the top 11 seeds have a chance at the No. 1 pick.”
Plus, no team can drop more than two slots, so the Ducks, for instance, will not fall below No. 3.
There will be two draws Monday night, the first for a shot at the top pick and Bedard, and the second for a shot to end up with the pick that follows Bedard. Below are the odds for “winning” the first lottery draw:

+ The Vancouver Canucks, at 3 per cent, are the lowest-seeded team with a shot at moving up to No. 1 and taking hometown boy Bedard, who is from North Vancouver, B.C.
+ The Ottawa Senators’ pick in this draft is top-5 protected, which means that if they move up into that range, they will keep their pick. If not, their selection goes to Arizona as part of the Jakob Chychrun trade. If Ottawa holds on to this year’s pick, they automatically give their selection in 2024 to the Coyotes, which would be unprotected.
