West Ham travel to Gent in the Europa Conference League quarter finals

David Moyes warns West Ham need to improve if they are to win the Europa Conference League… after the Hammers drew Gent in the quarter-finals to bring back memories of 1964-65 European Cup Winners’ Cup run

  • West Ham won before Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Co went on to lift trophy
  • Moyes hopes that is a good omen as they aim to reach this year’s final in Prague
  • Should West Ham beat Gent they will face Anderlecht or AZ Alkmaar in the semis

The road to Prague presented itself to West Ham as David Moyes’ men were handed a favourable draw with Belgian side Gent in the Europa Conference League quarter finals.

For older fans, it brought back memories of the Hammers’ 1964/65 European Cup Winners’ Cup run which started with a two-legged tie against Gent.

The English side won 2-1 before Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Co went on to lift the trophy.

Moyes hopes that is a good omen as they aim to reach this year’s final in the Czech capital.

Should West Ham beat Gent, who sit fifth in the Belgian First Division, they will face either Anderlecht or AZ Alkmaar in the semi finals.

‘You can never tell with football,’ Moyes said when asked about being the bookies’ favourites.

‘I would never ever be presumptuous to think that’s the case because we need to improve. I need to get us closer to our levels.’

West Ham, winners in all 10 of their European games this season, will travel to Gent on Thursday April 13 before tackling the all-important second leg at home the following week.

‘We’ve now had two quarter finals in the last two years in Europe,’ Moyes added.

‘We’ve had some great trips with the supporters. We’ve played in some brilliant stadiums. It’s been great for the club. We’ve really enjoyed it.’
