West Bengal: Cockroach found during Anganwadi midday meal in Midnapore

In West Midnapore’s Chandrakona, a cockroach was found in “khichdi” midday meal of Anganwadi, amid an on-going visit by the central team in West Bengal for midday meal inspection. Earlier a snake and lizard were found in midday meals of two different schools in the state a few weeks back.

After identifying the cockroach in the meal, the school authority immediately stopped the students from eating the food. The Joint Block Development Officer (BDO) Abhijit Poria rushed to the school and took stock of the situation. He spoke to the teachers and parents, followed by which, he will submit a report.

“I have monitored the situation. I have spoken to the parents and the teachers on the matter. I will submit a report to the Block Development Officer (BDO),” Poria said, following the incident.

The cook Chandana Bhuniya apologized and said, “When I noticed the cockroach, I informed the authority. We have also called the parents who had taken the food home.”

The teacher has also apologized for the incident and then freshly cooked food was again sent to the children.

Anganwadi Services is under Umbrella Integrated Child Development Services Scheme, which was introduced in 1975 with the objectives to improve the nutritional and health status of children in the 0-6 age-group and also provide the foundation for social development of the children.

The Central team started a review of the mid-day meal scheme in various districts of West Bengal from Monday. The team is being accompanied by one representative from the state government. The team conducted its inspection today in schools of South 24 Parganas and West Midnapore districts. The team will also likely to visit Birbhum and North Bengal, people in the know told ET. Yesterday, it had visited North 24 Parganas district after a joint review meeting with the state education department.

Meanwhile, expressing her dissatisfaction against the central team Mamata Banerjee said, “The state is not receiving central funds while the central teams are being sent to Bengal.”During the visit of the central team, in some schools the staff and cooks in the kitchen of the schools were seen wearing aprons, headgear and masks.

The Opposition BJP claimed that the team were taken to schools which were equipped with the proper facilities in the schools. BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari tweeted, “Central Inspection Team’s being led by WB Govt Officials to a few handpicked schools to review midday Meal implementation. Result – Cooking staff wearing aprons & gloves. Neat & clean kitchen. They should randomly select the school & reach there abruptly to catch them off guard.”
