Well Intentioned: Natalie Portman on Her Springtime Self-Care Strategies

From mantras to meditation, mindfulness to manifestation, Well Intentioned offers an intimate look at how to make space for self-care in meaningful ways, big and small.

There’s no time like springtime for Natalie Portman—especially in Los Angeles, where the Oscar-winning actor is soaking in the season. “There are flowers everywhere, everything is fresh and blooming,” Portman tells me, emanating the bouquet of a Provençal garden thanks to a spritz of Miss Dior—the fragrance that she’s been the face of for well over a decade. “I took a long drive today in the Hills, and everything was so green and yellow with all kinds of mustard flowers,” she continues. “I have lots of poppies blooming [in my backyard] right now, too. It’s incredible!”

For the 40-year-old star and mother of two, who will reprise her role as Jane Foster in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder out this July, spring isn’t just a time of renewal for nature, but of oneself too. From eating locally (and making lots of Romesco sauce!) to unplugging in the evening for more quality time with her family, here Portman shares her latest self-care strategies come spring.

1. Drink More Water, Less Alcohol

I’ve actually cut out…not cut out, but I’m drinking less alcohol and no coffee since the new year, which has been really, really nice, actually. I find that my energy is evening out. I’m not getting very tired, and then pumping it up. It feels more steady! Filling a two-liter water bottle up and carrying it around all day is helpful. And then going out less for dinner is also more helpful for me to not have wine. It’s much easier if I’m just eating at home to stay away from that. It’s a little harder when you’re out!

2. Eat Locally

I’ve been ordering this amazing farm box here called Farm to Curb that I’m obsessed with that is all organic local producers. And also a lot of great local chefs that are making incredible things every week that you can add on, and that’s been really amazing too, because I’ve been able to eat more at home and I feel like that’s just healthier in general. And of course to have incredible produce is more inspiring to make stuff. They’ve been having this amazing ready-made Romesco sauce that they put in, and then any vegetable that you put in and roast, it just makes it fancy immediately. So even cabbage or cauliflower or anything suddenly gets fancy because of it. It’s been really a delight.

3. Unplug Before Bed

I think it’s good just to take a break from my phone. I feel like when I’m doing that, I really just shut off, which is amazing. Definitely before bed is a great time, and also whenever I’m with my kids and trying to really stay away from it, because I think you start just being in multiple places at once and you realize to be actually present with someone you kind of need to not be on your phone. Especially I think working moms, you always have a running list of a thousand things. So if you have your phone on you, you will be thinking about that stuff and looking at it.

4. Get Moving Outdoors

I’ve been trying to run or swim four times a week. So that’s been a big change, which has been very good. When I’m running, I’ll often catch up on The Daily or I’ll listen to an audiobook. Less often I listen to music, funny enough. I like to listen to music when I’m totally relaxed. And somehow listening to ideas is more helpful to me when I’m running. I’ve really been doing podcasts recently just to keep up with the news since it’s been so upsetting and the least we can do is keep on top of it.

5. Stay Moisturized

I feel like keeping moisturized, especially as I’m getting older, is the most important part of beauty. It also helps all the makeup look better when it’s on. Before putting on my Forever Nude foundation or putting on a lipstick, to have the base well-moisturized, which I also do with masks and stuff the night before. It’s been kind of a ‘getting mature’ trick. [Laughs]
