Phillies fans took matters into their own hands as Angel Hernandez missed a number of close calls against the home team on Sunday Night Baseball.
Hernandez is the most prominent member of the old guard remaining, and perhaps the best possible example to get rid of the human element in the game of baseball. Robot umpires will never fully take over the sport without some sort of human watchdog, but an electronic strike zone would surely be better than this.
As entertaining as Schwarber’s fuming fit was, it takes away from the game itself. In a one-run affair in the ninth inning, the attention of the public should be on the Phillies trying to make a late comeback, not the umpire.
Hernandez is frequently the center of attention, rather than fading into the background. That’s against the very nature of his job description.

No, Phillies fans didn’t put Hernandez at risk. Rather, they just heckled him as we was trying to make a quick escape out of the Citizen’s Bank Park parking lot.
Considering he was a deciding factor in a one-run ball game, who can blame him? I sure as hell wouldn’t wait around to explain myself to the fanbase.
After the retirement of Joe West, Hernandez became the most prominent, well-known umpire in baseball, and not for good reasons. He’s always on the wrong end of moments like these.
Schwarber merely said out loud what most players are thinking in games umpired by Angel — how is he going to screw me over this time?
