India needed a solid opening partnership after conceding a 99-run lead in the first innings and Rohit and KL Rahul, two of India’s highest scorers in the series were at it again blunting the new ball, negotiating the tough period and riding on some luck to take their team unscathed through to stumps on the second day.
Both of them started the day in the same fashion before Rahul got out four short of his half-century as he completed 300 runs in the series. Rohit found an able ally in Cheteshwar Pujara as both of them exchanged their playing styles.
Pujara was aggressive from the start, taking on bowlers whether it was pull-shot against Moeen Ali or an upper-cut against Chris Woakes, Pujara showed his intent from the outset, which took the pressure off Rohit as he continued his merry run bringing up his third half-century of the series. But India needed a big one from the opener.
Rohit too opened up after getting to fifty as he scored his next 50 off just 59 balls bringing up a well-made, classy century in front of a huge crowd at the Oval. The entire dressing room including skipper Virat Kohli at the forefront was up on its feet applauding a game-changing and probably a series-defining knock.
First century outside India for the Hitman! He gets there with a monster six over long on!

The transformation of #RohitSharma into a world class opening batsman has been staggering. This century was inevitable given the way he has batted in this series. Privileged to see this. Class.

Well done Rohit Sharma. No one deserves a Century as much as he does. All these days the 100 balls faced was >>> 100 runs scored. He has got the runs now. Toughest job in cricket currently and he has shown his class. #ENGvIND

For a man better known for scoring 200s in 100odd balls, this 100 off 200 balls has been quite an evolution. #RohitSharma

What a tour. He deserved a pitch like this for batting so masterfully in far more difficult conditions in the Tests before this one.
