Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid stunned the crowd at the 76ers-Charlotte Hornets game after he threw himself an alley-oop off the backboard.
On Dec. 8, the 14-11 Philadelphia 76ers narrowly defeated the 14-13 Charlotte Hornets 110-106.
The victory marked the Sixers’ 16th consecutive win over the Hornets, which is the longest current winning streak by any NBA team against a specific opponent.
Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia team in scoring with 32 points, making eight out of 17 attempted field goals. One of those eight successful field goals came on a beautiful alley-oop that Embiid caught — by tossing it to himself off the backboard.
“Joel, assisting his own dunk!” read the announcer as he brought the score to 41-33 in the second quarter.

The Sixers started the season out strong, going 8-2 through Nov. 6. Then, Philadelphia lost nine of its next 12 games, prompting the Sixers to fight for a December rebound. Since Dec. 3, the 76ers have been on a three-game win streak, including two back-to-back wins over the Charlotte Hornets.
Embiid has been a critical part of the team’s success this season, guiding the team through its three most recent wins. Ranked as one of the NBA’s best big men heading into the 2021-22 season, Embiid himself said that he is making a run for Defensive Player of the Year this year.
His defensive role was played up in his win over the Hornets, with Embiid using his stature to amass foul calls from helpless defenders attempting to stop his downcourt surges. Embiid has proven to be a game-changer in the lineup, as the 76ers trended downward with losses while Embiid was out on COVID protocols.
Losing Ben Simmons seemed like a major blow to the 76ers when the season opened, but Joel “The Process” Embiid has proven to be the cornerstone of the 76ers — and one who can dribble, pass and shoot to himself.
