Watch: Andre Russell slams 14-ball 50 in CPL, achieves this huge record

Continuing his smashing form in the T20s from international cricket for West Indies, the hard-hitting star all-rounder arrived in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in style smashing the ST Lucia Kings bowlers all around the Warner Park in St Kitts on Friday.

Russell arrived at the crease in the 18th over at a point when Tallawahs had already scored 199 runs with three overs still remaining. Russell got only one ball to play in the 18th over, however, when he did get the strike from the start in the penultimate over of the innings, he didn’t let go of scoring opportunities and made a mockery of Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz.

First up, a short ball and Russell pulled it over mid-wicket. The second ball was a no-ball and Russell was dropped and boy he made the Kings pay for that. After a couple of singles, Russell hit three sixes and a four of the second no-ball of the over as Tallawahs accumulated 32 runs off the over.

Migael Pretorius took the single on the first ball of the last over by Obed McCoy and Russell made him pay too. A slower ball – six, a length ball – six, and a couple of fours to end the innings as Russell brought up the fastest-ever fifty by a batsman in the history of the CPL overtaking JP Duminy, who previously held the record, smashing a 15-ball fifty in the 2019 edition playing for the then, Barbados Tridents.

Russell’s assault and contributions from Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton, Haider Ali meant Tallawahs posted 255 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets, making it the second highest team total in the history of the league, only behind Trinbago Knight Riders’ 267/2 in the 2019 edition against Tallawahs themselves.

The score proved too much for the Kings as they lost the game by 120 runs with the South African Pretorius picking up four wickets on his CPL debut.

Russell’s knock would be a great news for the Kolkata Knight Riders and their fans and they would be hoping that Russell continues his form in the IPL as well.
