Washington State football fans rush field, plant flag in Seattle after Apple Cup win

Washington State football dominated the Apple Cup on the road at Husky Stadium in Washington and Wazzu fans made sure to leave their mark.

Over the past decade — and really throughout the history of the rivalry — the Washington Huskies have dominated the Washington State Cougars in the Apple Cup. Coming into Friday night, Washington State football had just one win in the last 11 years against their in-state foes.

They changed the course of recent history at Husky Stadium, however, with a dominant victory as Wazzu posted a 40-13 victory, their biggest win in the history of the Apple Cup.

Even on the road in Seattle, that didn’t stop the Washington State football fans in attendance from making their presence felt after the win as the fans rushed the field and surrounded Cougars quarterback Jayden de Lauria as he planted a Wazzu flag right in the middle of the field at Husky Stadium.

De Lauria and Washington State fans had every reason to be amped up. Not only had the program been searching for this Apple Cup win for some time, but to do so in such convincing fashion was something special.

The Cougars were wholly dominant in the affair as the quarterback went 27-of-32 for 245 yards, Max Borghi rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and the defense picked off Huskies quarterback Sam Huard four times.

In what could’ve been a disastrous season for Wazzu given the dismissal of head coach Nick Rolovich amid controversy, the Cougars showed tremendous resilience throughout and actually got better down the stretch, as evidenced by the Apple Cup victory. They now finish the season at 7-5 and await their bowl-game fate.
