Vivek Agnihotri has tweeted in support of same sex marriages, stating that it is a need and not a crime. The filmmaker reacted to a tweet about Central Government’s application in Supreme Court, stating that same sex marriage is an urban elitist concept.

Voicing his thoughts on same-sex marriages, the filmmaker wrote, “NO. Same sex marriage is not an ‘urban elitist’ concept. It’s a human need. Maybe some sarkari elites drafted it who have never travelled in small towns & villages. Or Mumbai locals. First, same sex marriage is not a concept. It’s a need. It’s a right. And in a progressive, liberal & inclusive civilisation like Bharat, same sex marriage should be normal, not a crime.”

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also shared a still from Modern Love: Mumbai and tweeted, “Come on Supreme Court! Pave the path. Legalise same sex marriages.” The filmmaker had directed called the shots for an episode from the 2022 anthology series, which narrated the love story of a gay couple.

A Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, which includes Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, PS Narasimha and Hima Kohli, will hear centre’s application about their views on same-sex marriage getting social acceptance.
