Virat Kohli recommended selectors to remove Rohit Sharma as vice-captain due to THIS reason: Report

Indian skipper Virat Kohli in a surprising move announced Thursday evening that he will step down as India’s captain in the shortest format after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE and Oman in October-November.

While fans and many experts have been wanting the same for the last few years but when it happened, there have been various speculations and theories of why Kohli took that decision, what led to it, was it his own or was he being forced to do it, so on and so forth.

For years, there have been theories of a rift between Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who was seen as the frontrunner to be India’s captain in T20Is after his success in the IPL, winning foove trophies with Mumbai Indians as a captain. But the management and the board have denied the same, every time the issue has spread like wildfire.

Now after Virat Kohli’s decision, a report in the news agency PTI has suggested that he has suggested the removal of Rohit Sharam as vice-captain to the selection committee because of his age. Rohit Sharma is 34 and Kohli has suggested that the management should look at someone like KL Rahul as the next captain and Rishabh Pant to be groomed for the top job, as his deputy in T20Is.

While Rahul has been skipper of Punjab franchise in the IPL for two years now, Pant, who is seen as Delhi Capitals’ future captain was handed the captaincy for IPL 2021 and will retain even after Shreyas Iyer’s return.

The report doesn’t go on length on the claim but quoted a top BCCI official as saying, “This didn’t go down well with the Board which believes that Kohli doesn’t want an actual successor.”

As per the official, this may be the beginning of the end of Virat Kohli’s era as he suggested that Kohli knew that would have been removed from white-ball captaincy and if the team doesn’t do well in the upcoming T20 World Cup, his white-ball captaincy was in danger.

“He just reduced a bit of pressure on himself as it would seem that he is there on his own terms. It might not happen for 50 overs if the performance in T20 hits a downward spiral,” the source told PTI further.
