Video: Stampede for tickets in Hyderabad for India vs Australia match injures four

A stampede broke out among the cricket fans gathered to purchase tickets at the Gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad for the third T20I match between India and Australia, injuring four people

The stampede happened after a huge crowd had come to the Gymkhana grounds to purchase tickets for the match and the pushing and jostling caused the situation to go out of control.

A video of the incident showed police personnel wielding their batons to disperse the crowd and restore law and order.

The video also showed many young men falling down in the melee and footwear lying scattered around the area.

Reacting to the video, many asked why cricket fans who turned up to buy tickets should be treated like that.

“Shameful the way police and state cricket association treats fans like these,” commented a user. “This is how fans of the Game are treated. What if one fine day the fans of the game decide not to show up for the Game again,” said another.

The third T20I stadium between India and Australia will take place in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on September 25.

Australia currently lead the three-match series 1-0 after downing India by four wickets in a mammoth run chase in the first T20I in Mohali.

Put to bat first by Australia, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (2) cheaply. They were struggling at 35/2, but KL Rahul (55) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) stabilised the innings with a 68-run stand. Then, Hardik Pandya played a brilliant knock of 71* off just 30 balls with seven fours and five sixes to take India to 208/6 at the end of the allotted overs.

Pacers Nathan Ellis (3/30) and Josh Hazlewood (2/39) shared the bowling honours for Australia.

Chasing 209, openers Aaron Finch (22) and Cameron Green got Australia off to a solid start with a quickfire 39-run stand. After Finch departed, Green continued to play impressively and stitched a 70-run stand with Steve Smith (35). He was dismissed for an impressive 61 off 30 balls.

India then made a brief comeback to the match, getting the wickets of Smith, Glenn Maxwell (1) and Josh Inglis (17) within a space of just 36 runs. But wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade (45*) and debutant Tim David (18) stitched a 62-run stand to help the Aussies win the match by four wickets. Cameron Green was adjudged as ‘Man of the Match’ for his 61 and 1/46.

The second T20I match will take place on Friday at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
