Veteran Roland Schoeman included in SA team for World Aquatic Championships

JOHANNESBURG – Roland Schoeman has been selected as part of Team South Africa for the upcoming 20th World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka, Japan from 14 to 30 July.

“This photo was from my first-ever world championships. It was held in Fukuoka in 2001 & I won bronze in the 50m Freestyle. Today I was notified that I’ve been included in this year’s world champs also to be held in Fukuoka. 22 years later I’m going to be racing in Fukuoka again,” posted Schoeman on Twitter.

The Olympian, who lives in Arizona in the United States, took part in the 2023 South African National Senior Championships in April, winning the 50m butterfly in 23.82 seconds and coming second in the 50m freestyle in 22.89 seconds.

Schoeman is a three-time Olympic medalist, winning gold in 2004 in the 400m freestyle relay, silver in the individual 100m freestyle, and bronze in the 50m freestyle. He also has three World Championships: one in the 50m freestyle and two in the 50m butterfly.
