Ustad Rashid Khan receives death threat and extortion calls, Kolkata police arrest two – Times of India

Kolkata Police have arrested two men for allegedly sending death threats and making extortion calls to music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan. As per the Initial investigation, these two people were the Padma Shri awardee’s employees who were appointed recently.

Kolkata Police have revealed that one accused, Avinash Bharti, was a driver whom Ustad Rashid Khan appointed recently and the other, Deepak Aulakh, an office assistant was working for the past few days only before leaving the job.

Aulakh, originally from Uttar Pradesh, returned to his hometown in UP and started making threatening calls to the music legend’s residence using various internet numbers. He had allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh as “protection money”, but later lowered the amount to Rs 20 lakh. Aulakh also threatened that if the amount is not paid, he would kill Ustad Rashid Khan.

On the other hand, Bharti was reportedly helping Aulakh by sharing with him all the details of Rashid Khan’s movements.

On October 9, a case under sections 385/34 of the Indian Penal Code, since amended to 387/120B IPC was filed. Aulakh was then apprehended and brought to Kolkata on transit remand. Both accused are currently in police custody and the investigation is underway.

Ustad Rashid Khan, the Indian classical musician in the Hindustani music tradition, is from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, and is also the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan.
