On the first day of the US Open Tennis Tournament, reigning champion Daniil Medvedev started his title defence with a victory over American Stefan Kozlov men’s singles first round in New York last night. The top seed Russian overpowered Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 and will face Arthur Rinderknech in the next round. Former World No. 1 Andy Murray also registered a victory over 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to move to the second round.

In women’s singles, Russian Veronika Kudermetova, French Caroline Garcia and 29th seed American Alison Riske-Amritraj moved into the second round. World No. 3, Greek Maria Sakkari won against German Tatjana Maria 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to advance to the second round. However, former world number one and current 7th seed Simona Halep was knocked out of the tournament in women’s singles first round, losing to Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

The tournament is taking place without Novak Djokovic due to a dispute related to the Corona protocol. This is the second Grand Slam of the year in which Djokovic is not participating. So Rafael Nadal, a four-time US Open champion is a hot fevorite in this mega event. Meanwhile, focus will also be on 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. After one of the greatest careers in tennis history, Serena is expected to play in her final tournament at the US Open.
