  • Rory McIlroy is struggling to stay in contention with Fitzpatrick and Scheffler

Matt Fitzpatrick is leading the way at the US Open heading into the back nine ahead of what promises to be a thrilling finale.

Fitzpatrick held a share of the lead overnight alongside Will Zalatoris and has had a steady start to his round to keep himself in pole position to win the first major of his career.

Meanwhile, World No. 1 Scheffler has shot up the leaderboard on the final day to put himself in a good position to add another major to his CV.

The American hit four birdies on the front nine, and looks to be finding his best form when it matters most.

Zalatoris currently sits third, and is just two shots off the pace, while Rory McIlroy and John Rahm still have a chance of walking away with the trophy, although their putting will need to improve in the final holes.

There is still plenty to play for at the business end of the leaderboard, but some of the early starters have already finished their final rounds.

Former winner Justin Rose ended the tournament seven over par, leaving him in a tie for 37th place.

Dustin Johnson, playing just a week after giving up his PGA membership, did not fare much better as he finished on six over par at Brookline.

A number of other major winners also endured a difficult Sunday, with Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau finishing 49th, 55th and 56th respectively.
