US mass shooting: 2 dead, 3 injured at Washington State music festival
Washington police has said two people were killed and three others injured after a shooter began firing “randomly” into a crowd at Washington State music festival Saturday night.
The suspect shot “randomly into the crowd,” at the Washington campground near the Gorge Amphitheater where thousands of people were attending an electronic the Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival, Kyle Foreman, a public information officer with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office told a news conference.
Officers, he said, responded to a call at 8:23 p.m. local time (11:23 p.m. ET) “to reports of shots fired into the crowd.”
“The shooter then walked away from where the incident happened,” he said. He added that after law enforcement moved into the area “he continued to randomly shoot into the crowd and the suspect was eventually taken into custody.”
“We don’t know what the motives were or what the intentions were of the shooter and we’ll have to wait and see if we can find that information out later on,” the police office said.
The suspect was shot in the confrontation with police, Foreman said.
A public alert had advised people that there was an active shooter in the area and to “run, hide or fight,” but Foreman said there was no effort to evacuate the festival. The festival continued following the shooting and did not end until early Sunday morning, Foreman said.
Foreman did not provide any details about the names and ages of the victims. Details on the victims would be released at a later time, Foreman added
Organizers of the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival said on social media that Sunday’s events at the Gorge were canceled.
There have been 307 mass shootings in the US in 2023, according to the Gun Violence archive.
