UP polls: Amit Shah’s big OBC pitch at rally with Nishad

Home minister Amit Shah urged UP’s fishermen community to vote for his party at a joint rally with the Nirbal Indian Shoshit Humara Aam Dal (Nishad) in Lucknow on Friday. He said that BJP would try to fulfill all demands of the community and highlighted the Centre’s schemes for Backward castes.

Nishad partyrepresents interests of communities dwelling by rivers and is one of the two main BJP allies, the other being the Apna Dal (S). Nishad party seeks Scheduled Caste status and reservation benefits that come with it. It is included in the OBC list at present. The party had made the SC demand a pre-condition for the alliance with BJP. Shah, however, did not mention the reservation issue.

“I want to remind you that in Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas had said that when Nishadraj saw Lord Ram and Sita sleeping on the floor during vanvaas (exile), he had tears in his eyes. We have seen our respected Lord Ram in a temple under a canvas sheet for years,” Shah said referring to the makeshift temple in Ayodhya until the verdict in 2019. “We all know who prevented construction of the temple of Lord Ram. When you helped Modi ji win with absolute majority, he laid the foundation stone of a tall and grand Ram temple and in no time we will see the work of constructing the temple at Lord Ram’s birthplace completed.”

Shah said Congress, BSP and the SP worked only for ‘their own castes’ and no work was done by them either for the welfare of the Nishad community or to improve standard of living of OBCs. Modi fulfilled their demand of making a separate ministry for fishermen, through which projects worth Rs 20,000 crore were implemented and gave constitutional status to the Backward Classes Commission, he said.
