Karl Lagerfeld’s masterful experimentations with material are what drew Dublin-based Róisín Pierce to fashion design. “I was amazed by what he could achieve in terms of fabrication for his haute couture collections for Chanel,” she says.
Pierce herself does not sketch her womenswear designs. Process led, they’re the result of extensive experimentations with embroidery, crochet and cotton lace. Her innovative approach caught the eye of Alexa Chung—and the two began messaging through Instagram. “I discovered Róisín’s work quite recently on Vogue Runway, which I peruse now and then to see what’s going on. I was immediately impressed by her frothy, intelligent designs and began to think of events I might be able to wear one to,” Chung explains.
Before Pierce knew it, she was traveling to London to present Chung with a selection of pieces for potential red-carpet events, one of which, a “decoration on decoration,” transparent, star-and-flower-detail top and skirt with an appliquéd floating flower overthrow from her “Two For Joy” collection was chosen as her look for the Met Gala 2023. “Alexa’s mood changed when she saw the look,” Pierce says. “It’s so nice knowing that they can have that effect on people.”
Divulging on how the intricate layers of Chung’s ethereal look was designed, Pierce explains: “The top is made up of multiples of satin crepe squares, patchworked together with overlaid delicate daisy-stitched organza. The squares are manipulated and pulled to create a highly textured centered flower throughout the piece. We appliquéd these larger organic smocked flowers that were joined together with bows that float on top, forming a collage of pretty details. The skirt is made up of strips of a delicate star-flower embroidery set on a gauzy organza that floats. High-shine satin crepe strips are [also] smocked to form these little swirling petals that hug the waist and legs.”
