Unemployment rate in urban India in the January-March quarter of 2021-22 fell for the third consecutive quarter to 8.2% from 8.7% % in October-December quarter, 9.8% in the July-September quarter and 12.6% in the April-June quarter after the ebbing of the second wave of the pandemic. It stood at 9.3% in the corresponding quarter of 2020-21.

The quarterly periodic labour force survey released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation on Thursday showed male urban unemployment rate during the period at 7.7% while the female urban unemployment rate was higher at 10.1%, maintaining the trend seen over the last several quarters.

Joblessness or unemployment rate (UR) is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labour force.

As per the survey, the labour force participation rate for all ages remained the same quarter-on-quarter at 47.3% in January-March quarter compared to 46.9% in July-September quarter and 46.8% in the April-June quarter of 2021. Labour force participation rate in the corresponding quarter of 2020-21 strood at 47.5%.

Labour force according to CWS is the number of persons either employed or unemployed on an average in a week preceding the date of survey. LFPR is defined as the percentage of population in the labour force.

The report further said that the worker population ratio (WPR) during the last quarter of 2021-22 stood at 43.4%, marginally higher than 43.2% in the preceding quarter, 42.3% in July-September quarter of 2021 and 40.9% April-June quarter. The worker population ratio in the corresponding quarter of 2020-21 stood at 42.4%.

At the all-India level, in the urban areas, a total number of 5,714 FSUs (UFS blocks) have been surveyed during the January-March quarter of 2021. The number of urban households surveyed was 44,778 and the number of persons surveyed was 1,73,091 in urban areas.

NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. The estimates of unemployed persons in current weekly status (CWS) give an average picture of unemployment in a short period of 7 days during the survey period.

In the CWS approach, a person is considered unemployed if he or she did not work even for one hour on any day during the week but sought or was available for work at least for an hour on any day during the period.
