Ukraine-Scotland World Cup playoff rescheduled for June 1
Back on the first day of April, the United States Men’s National Team was drawn into Group B for the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar this fall, along with England, Iran, and the victor of a postponed European playoff.
Dates for those rescheduled fixtures are now known.
Per Sky Sports and Mark Ogden of ESPN, the World Cup qualifying playoff match between Ukraine and Scotland will now take place at Hampden Park on June 1. The game was originally set to occur on March 24 but was understandably delayed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Additionally, the winner of this tie will go on to face Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium on June 5 for a place in the World Cup.
“There is huge hope this game can go ahead but behind the scenes there is huge concern that with all the difficulties that everybody is dealing with in Ukraine, it might not happen,” Sky Sports senior reporter Rob Dorsett said of the Ukraine-Scotland contest. “An awful lot could happen…between now and June 1. There are still doubts whether this could go ahead.
“All domestic football in Ukraine has been suspended. Nine members of the Ukraine squad play for Dynamo Kyiv, who haven’t played since the middle of December. What sort of state are they going to be in to play this match?”
Assuming the matches go on, as hoped, the eventual winner of the playoff will open its World Cup tournament against the United States on Monday, Nov. 21.
