ukraine: In about hour-long call, ‘Quint’ leaders discuss ‘coordinated response’ to Russia’s ‘brutal tactics’ in Ukraine – Times of India

NEW DELHI: United States President Joe Biden hosted a call of the leaders of ‘the Quint’, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and United Kingdom PM Boris Johnson “to discuss their coordinated response” to the escalating crisis in Ukraine, the White House said.
During the call, lasting just under one hour, the leaders underlined their horror at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s use of increasingly brutal tactics in Ukraine, such as siege warfare and the targeting of civilians, UK Prime Minister Johnson’s office confirmed, adding he welcomed the unity of allies standing steadfastly against Russia’s reprehensible behaviour. “He noted how effective collective action has been in undermining Putin’s war machine,” a Downing Street spokesperson said.
A White House statement added they also underscored their continued support for Ukraine, including by providing security assistance to “the brave Ukrainians who are defending their country from Russian aggression, and humanitarian assistance to the millions” who have fled.
The leaders affirmed their ongoing commitment to support Ukraine militarily, diplomatically and economically, equipping the democratically-elected government in Kyiv with the tools it needs to defend itself, the statement from Johnson’s office added.
“They also resolved to increase pressure on Russia to halt its unprovoked invasion, including by maintaining wide-ranging and coordinated sanctions,” the Downing Street spokesperson said, adding the PM looked forward to further discussions at the Nato and G7 summits this week, including on how to increase military support to Ukraine to qualitatively improve their defensive capability.
The Nato and EU summits on Thursday, followed by a trip to Poland and talks with President Andrzej Duda Saturday, would be the most momentous foreign trip of Biden’s presidency, on the frontline of the West’s confrontation with Russia.
Russia’s war is about to enter its second month, and US and Western allies have imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow, crippling the rouble and stock market, while going after President Putin’s wealthy supporters.
On the ground in Ukraine, Western-supplied weapons, backed by years of training and funding, have helped the country’s military to bloody the Russian invaders on multiple fronts.
However, with the war starting to look like a stalemate, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is making increasingly desperate appeals to the West to do more.
