Former New York Jets running back Ty Johnson has revealed that the team released him just days after telling him to get surgery for an injury suffered while working out on his own.

The Jets released Johnson on April 26 with a non-football injury designation, but the former Detroit Lions running back took to social media this weekend to tell his side of the story.

Johnson has explained that after he informed the team he suffered a torn pectoral muscle while working out, the instruction of the team doctor was for him to get surgery, which he duly obliged.

The following week, he says, he was cut by the team.

‘I’ve had some dark, dark days, man,’ Johnson said as he sat in a cold tub.

‘Saw the team doctor, he was like, “You need to get it fixed.” Flew out the next day. Came back happy that I got it done, even though I didn’t want to get it done. That following Wednesday, you out of there.

‘And I was like, “Damn.” But at the end of the day, man, I know I’m gonna be alright.’

The Jets had added Johnson off the waiver wire in 2020 after the 2019 sixth-round draft pick was released by the Detroit Lions.

In 44 games with Gang Green, he ran for 145 yards and four touchdowns and caught 62 passes for 559 yards and three TDs.

He also proved to be a key contributor in more ways than just his impact from the backfield after playing 42 percent of snaps on special teams.

Johnson clearly was not high on the Jets RB depth chart and had to contend with Michael Carter and Zonovan ‘Bam’ Knight for snaps, and this was after promising rookie RB Breece Hall was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

Following his release, the Jets did not waste time in adding a replacement as they drafted Pittsburgh Panthers tailback Israel Abanikanda in the fifth round.

Abanikanda tallied 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground in his final college season.
