Two women trying to foil brother’s abduction shot dead in Delhi
Pinki and Jyoti, residents of Ambedkar Basti, were shot multiple times in the early hours of Sunday and were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime, shedding light on a potential monetary dispute as the motive, although links to a gambling racket have not been ruled out.
The police investigation revealed that Lalit, the victims’ brother, had lent Rs 10,000 to a suspect named Dev, who also resided in Ambedkar Basti. However, Dev refused to repay the debt, leading to a public confrontation between Lalit and Dev on Saturday. This altercation seemingly triggered the fatal chain of events. Lalit managed to escape unharmed.
The assailants, about five to six individuals, arrived outside Lalit’s house around 3:20 am to 3:30 am, pelting stones and attempting to break open the main door. Lalit’s wife, Anita, alerted him to the situation after witnessing the group of men armed with iron rods. Unable to break in during their initial attempt, the attackers departed.
“I informed my husband, who was sleeping, about the situation. At the time of the incident, more than 10 people, including children, were at the house and we all were frightened. The men failed to break the door and left after sometime,” Anita told TOI.
However, at 4 am, the assailants returned and demanded Lalit accompany them. It was at this moment that Jyoti and Pinki courageously confronted the assailants, resulting in gunshots being fired. Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds and observed around 50-60 terrified residents, including children, seeking shelter. Sadly, both sisters were shot and sustained injuries. They were rushed to the hospital but succumbed to their wounds. The incident shocked the neighborhood, with residents recounting the chaotic scene. Local accounts indicated that one of the assailants fired into the air before engaging in indiscriminate firing, causing panic and chaos. The brave sisters’ husbands and neighbors expressed their horror at the tragic turn of events. The Delhi Police swiftly took action, arresting Arjun, Michael, and Dev in connection with the crime. Over 100 officers were involved in the investigation, and video evidence depicted one suspect firing at the victims while another appeared to be directing the attack. Although claims of Lalit’s injury surfaced, the police denied them, citing his previous involvement in criminal cases.
